Instrument Lessons
Instrument lessons allow interns to learn and improve on their primary instrument. These lessons are in place to ensure that each intern is growing in their musical excellence.Interns are able to pick one of the following lessons for their first year:
- Bass lessons
- Drum lessons
- Piano lessons
- Acoustic lessons
- Electric lessons
- Voice lessons
Worship Perspectives
Course description:
Worship has become a “genre” of music rather than our way of expressing God’s worthiness. This course is designed to help students understand that music is not the focus in worship but rather one of the many ways to express devotion to God and to lead others into deeper communion with Him.
This class is separated into two courses–one which is offered to First Year Students, and the other which is offered to Second Year Students.
Course objectives:
- Students will begin to understand God’s role in their lives and their role in His plan with worshipping Him at the center of both.
- To increase the appetitive for everyday personal encounters with Jesus Christ.
- To strengthen each student theologically and doctrinally
- To shape students worldview
- To help students renew their minds and leave worldly ways of thinking behind.
- To Increase knowledge of God’s involvement in mans life throughout the Old and New Testament
- To fill the spiritual “tank”, giving students the ability to exhort congregations with the Word of God.
- To inspire songwriters to write doctrinally sound songs that will engage congregations in times of worship.
- To increase student’s ability to influence the culture with the Truth of God’s Word.
Worship Leadership
Course description:
Today’s churches are filled with performers rather than Lead Worshippers. This course is designed to give leaders and musicians all the necessary tools to successfully usher congregations into the unique presence of the Lord.
This class is separated into two courses–one which is offered to First Year Students, and the other which is offered to Second Year Students.
Course objectives:
Students will begin to understand their role on and off the platform.
- To know the role of a worship leader and live worship as a lifestyle
- To lead worship effectively learning to “show” God so people can respond
- To develop the boldness to lead worship even in a “not so spiritually charged” environment.
- To learn how to create a sense of “journey” in worship.
- To learn to put worship set together for every environment to serve the situation to get people to worship
- To learn how to exhort a congregation
- To learn how to work along side the Pastor/leader of the church or event.
- To learn how to “shepherd” a team.
- To play together as a team
- To gain experience through their many times of leading worship
Music Theory
This class will give you a practical understanding of how music works. Music Theory will help you to analyze the fundamental parameters and elements of music.This class is only offered to second year interns.
Course description:
Music Theory teaches tonal and rhythmic fundamentals. This including the written study of music notation, simple and compound meters, major and minor scales, the Nashville number system, keyboard harmony, as well as an introduction to intervals and triads.
Course objectives:
- Understand and evaluate all types of written and notated music.
- Recognize pulse and meter and apply it within written notation.
- Have a full understanding of major and minor scales and how they coincide with harmony.
- Apply the Nashville Number System to their primary melodic instrument.
- Have a basic understanding of intervals and triads and how they function in tonal harmony.
Experiencing God
Experiencing God is a class taught by the Director of The School of Worship, Jonathan Williams. This class is designed to give graduate interns an opportunity to learn how to experience God on and off the stage as a worshipper. Students learn what God desires from a worshipper in the Old as well as the New Testament scriptures. We look at how God manifests himself to his people and how we can usher God’s presence into the lives of people each day.
Course objectives:
- To understand the presence of God and how to experience His presence.
- To understand and appropriate the power of Jesus Christ in the life of a worshipper.
- To see from scripture what worship God requires from his people and what’s acceptable worship
Band Practice
All School of Worship interns are placed into worship bands and are given the opportunity to practice and lead worship in various settings on campus. Bands are required to practice a minimum of once a week. Band practice is crucial as you will learn to work with your peers to bring different instruments together to form a fluid musical atmosphere while leading people into an intimate place of worship with God.
Band Fusion
Band Fusion provides the practical aspects on the development of a cohesive band practice. You will practice under the guide of experienced musicians (some of which have led worship at Acquire the Fire) and gain applicable understanding in leading worship in various settings.
This class is provided for select individuals in the First Year Program and for all Second Year Program students.
